Description:

The Sacramento Bee seeks a competitive part-time editor to join our local news editing team. This editor will be a key player in directing breaking news coverage on weekends, working with reporters to develop stories that resonate with our subscribers and contributing to our coverage with insightful stories that give readers a sense of place in the capital region. This versatile editor will also work with a variety of newsroom teams throughout the week, contributing both editing and reporting.

At The Bee, we put a premium on covering breaking news, but we also seek out stories that highlight how Northern Californians live their best lives on the weekend. Our journalism focuses on local communities, spotlights problems, surfaces solutions and truly makes a difference — all the reasons you got into journalism. We are part of McClatchy, a digitally driven company focused on innovation, with newsrooms in 30 communities in the United States.

Our community is changing, with an influx of new residents, unique restaurants and many opportunities for outdoor recreation. We’re a two-hour drive to the beach when you head west and a two-hour drive to Sierra Nevada summits around Lake Tahoe when you travel east.

In this local news editor, we’re seeking an assertive and decisive journalist with excellent news judgment and a sense of urgency. The editor should be able to spot stories and, when necessary, launch our newsroom in covering major breaking news. But, just as important, this editor will be a bridge connecting our weekday coverage to the stories that readers crave on weekends. This journalist will bring editing, reporting and writing skills and will handle a variety of stories produced across departments at The Sacramento Bee and in McClatchy newsrooms elsewhere in California.

Additionally, this editor will have opportunities to report and write stories that highlight the dynamic people and places that make the Sacramento area unique. We are seeking a versatile journalist who can find and tell interesting stories.

At least two years of local news experience is preferred; editing experience is a plus.

In this role, you will need to:

  • Work with reporters to drive coverage and develop stories off the news, with an eye on accountability journalism.
  • Think about the audience first and always, with a commitment to tactics that grow readership.
  • Demonstrate speed, competitiveness and SEO savvy through aggregating and storytelling tools.
  • Bring strong  collaborative instincts and a love of teamwork.
  • Show an unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.
  • Be comfortable with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.

What we’ll bring: As a journalist at McClatchy, you will join a supportive, flexible, collaborative team. McClatchy strives to be an employer of choice, and our benefits package is made with this goal in mind. With a focus on health, well-being, wealth and daily life, our package options include healthcare coverage for employees and their families, financial protection from expected and unexpected expenses, multiple no-cost wellness resources and even coverage for four-legged friends. Our overall benefit package also includes a 401(k) with employer match, competitive paid time off and corporate holidays, and a variety of mental health benefits. With an excellent support team and with focus on your well-being as a top corporate strategy, McClatchy provides benefits to support you and your family in achieving your health and wellness goals.

To apply, include a persuasive cover letter and your resume.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $30.00 and $38.00 per hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and relevant education. The person filling this role can expect to work about 20 hours per week.
