Description:
The Chilkat Valley News is looking for a community-minded reporter to cover the stunning Chilkat Valley in rural Southeast Alaska. As our new reporter, you’ll cover everything from climate change and local economics to tribal governance, outdoor adventures, transboundary mining, community arts and culture and, yes, local government in a place that’s sort of famous for feuding.
Your writing will empower and inform readers who are hungry for local news. Plus, you’ll get to:
- Experiment with story formats
- Focus on photojournalism
- Learn creative ways to reach low-bandwidth communities in the Chilkat Valley and beyond (hint: we’re a bulletin board town)
- Deep dive into public records
- Hold people accountable for their actions and stand in line next to them at the grocery store (we promise, this is a skill you want to master)
Why you’ll love it here:
The Chilkat Valley has all of the best of Alaska to offer: mountains to climb, rivers to fish, coastal hiking, great hunting and foraging, fresh seafood, and a small town with soul – but without the chains or fast food and occasionally the cell service.
What we offer:
- Salary: $38-41k based on experience
- Perks: Fly in and out of town with covered travel, attend journalism training and conferences a few times a year, and enjoy a flexible schedule
- Growth opportunities: Sharpen your skills with one-on-one mentorship and the creative freedom to explore stories that interest you.
- Work-life balance: We believe in creating a healthy, burnout-free work environment.
What you bring:
- A natural curiosity and passion for telling great stories
- A commitment to ethical, accurate journalism
- A collaborative mindset with a desire to be part of a supportive, small team
- An interest in learning the ropes of local governance – which in our case means community leadership, townsite government and tribal nations
- An enthusiasm for living in a small, outdoor-oriented town
About us: We’re a team of five, working closely to produce meaningful journalism for a community that craves thoughtful coverage. The Chilkat Valley News has been around for 58 years and we’re committed to maintaining a dynamic, inclusive, and stimulating work environment. You’ll join an editor, a part time office manager, and a two-person, part-time ad sales team working to produce the best weekly newspaper in the state.
