The Summit Daily News, located in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, is seeking an experienced watchdog reporter to cover the courts, public safety, county government and Dillon town government beats in the newsroom.

 

Here at the Summit Daily News, we punch above our weight, producing award-winning, impactful journalism that seeks to hold authority accountable and strengthen the bonds of our communities.

 

This is not a position for beginners. We need a mature, ambitious reporter who can file a records request, cover breaking news, ask top community leaders tough questions and be an experienced leader in our newsroom.

 

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Generate six to seven stories per week

• Take photos and videos

• Demonstrates effective use of social media tools to source stories and cover breaking news

• Work with community leaders/figures as well as other newsroom staff

• Be flexible in a changing, fast-paced environment

• Ensure accuracy, fairness and correct spelling in all reporting and editing duties

• Follow direction and vision of the Summit Daily News editor

• Make assigned deadlines without exception

• Be a team player and fill in for reporting vacancies as needed

• Be ethical within the guidelines set by the editor

 

Qualifications:

• Journalism degree required

• Minimum one year of crime and public safety experience required

• Must be available to work some nights and weekends

 

This position will work on a Monday to Friday schedule, typically, but some weekends may be required based on the newsroom’s needs.

 

Pay $24-$26.50/hour depending on experience. Competitive benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance after 60 days of employment, $500 recreation bonus after 6 months and 401k plan after one year.
