Decaturish.com seeks a reporter to help us tell the untold stories of our community.
About: Decaturish.com is a local news website in DeKalb County, Ga. established in 2013. We receive 250,000+ page views monthly and have 2,800+ digital subscribers who support our work. Appen Media Group purchased Decaturish in July 2024.
Salary: $40,000 to $45,000. Reporters who meet all of our expectations are also eligible for performance bonuses.
Beats: To be determined. Decaturish covers DeKalb County Schools, the cities of Decatur, Avondale Estates, Tucker, Stone Mountain and Clarkston, and the communities adjacent to Decatur in unincorporated DeKalb. The beat would include some, but not all, of these communities. Reporters would also be expected to participate in local election coverage. Coverage topics include public meetings, restaurant and development news and public safety.
Responsibilities:
– Filing at least two bylined stories daily, Monday through Thursday, for publication on Decaturish.com and filing stories on the weekends as needed.
– Working collaboratively with the editor and assistant editor to produce content for Decaturish.com and its associated print publication
– Helping the editor and assistant editor with Decaturish email products
– Meeting deadlines established by the editor and assistant editor
– Uploading stories to WordPress or a similar content management system
– Attending meetings in person whenever possible, remotely when necessary
– Covering breaking news as needed
– Taking photos as needed
– Collaborating with Decaturish.com’s media partners on newsgathering efforts

Our minimum requirements:
– A bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent experience (two years writing/freelancing for another publication).
– A hard-working attitude and a willingness to take on new challenges
– A commitment to fairness and telling the truth without fear or favor
– A desire to produce reporting that advocates for the most vulnerable members of our community
– Having reliable transportation and the ability to attend in-person meetings in our coverage area
Our ideal candidate would have:
– Familiarity with DeKalb County, GA and the metro Atlanta area.
– Experience working with content management platforms, including WordPress
– Experience working with a digital-first publication
– Experience taking photos
– An interest in appearing on multi-media platforms, such as podcasts and our weekly Decatur Dish show
