Position description

Security Adviser in International Department – Copenhagen.

We’re looking for a dynamic, experienced Security Adviser to contribute to the effective safety and security risk management of Danish Red Cross operations overseas.

The Red Cross is the world’s largest humanitarian organization and we are looking for a Security Adviser for Danish Red Cross, to support the Senior Security Adviser to roll out the DRC Security Framework and associated processes in the field, supporting long term and surge staff overseas, focusing primarily on operational support to the field and training.

You will deliver training at different levels for relevant stakeholders within the organisation, both in Denmark and overseas. You are expected to undertake security support missions to the field where DRC is operational, according to the need, as well as attending other relevant RC/RC Movement trainings and meetings, but will otherwise be HQ (Copenhagen) based.

The position is placed within the Operations Unit, which consists of 15 staff supporting the Danish Red Cross strategic engagement, localisation and operation in the 20 Countries where Danish Red Cross has bilateral presence in Africa, Middle East and Norther Africa and Europe/Asia. However, the Security team responsibilites cover the whole international operation, including emergency responses and travel.

Your main tasks, together with the Senior Security Adviser, include:

  • Security Strategy and Culture: support the development and implementation of the Security Framework; provide desk support on country specific security setups and documentation; build security culture across the organisation; develop and maintain close working relationships with other RC/RC Movement security staff; develop and maintain dashboards.
  • Monitoring and Travel management: monitor countries where DRC is present, provide advice and escalate concerns; visit offices and programmes to assess and advise on appropriate security risk management and monitor compliance with the DRC Security Framework; act as a focal point in the International Department for providing information and guidance on overseas travel and security; debrief returning travellers and delegates.
  • Training and Capacity development: design and deliver DRC security training and lead on planning and implementing these, including HEAT; provide inductions and briefings; participate in relevant global and network meetings; liaise with HR on training records and capacity development.
  • Ad hoc support: remain trained and on call for the Critical Incident Management Team; support handling of security incidents or managing rapid onset contextual changes; deputise Senior Security Adviser.
  • This position does not hold budgetary responsibility or manage other positions.

Qualifications

We believe that you would be a good match for this position, if you have:

Essential

  • Recent experience working in fragile/insecure contexts.
  • Previous humanitarian or development experience
  • Experience of developing, delivering international safety and security training for different levels of experience
  • Able to travel to conduct risk assessments and support the development of country security plans. Travel for up to two weeks at a time several times a year is expected
  • Strong training delivery skills
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Readiness to work on flexible times when necessary, such as when on-call or throughout an incident
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Manual driving license.

Desirable

  • Written and spoken French language skills, and / or spoken Arabic skills
  • Technical competency in field-based communications systems such as HF and VHF radios, satellite communications and driver awareness
  • Understanding of personal security and safety issues affecting humanitarian personnel and operations
  • Knowledge of Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement’s security approach and management procedures
