The Taos News, an independently owned newspaper in Northern New Mexico, is seeking a sports editor with a passion for covering high school prep sports and all of the outdoor recreation Taos County has to offer.

Through strong reporting and photos, the person selected for this role will have the opportunity to create a weekly sports section for a community that is deeply passionate about their school athletics programs. You’ll cover each prep sports season closely, from football, basketball, soccer, tennis, cross country, track, and everything in between. The sports editor will also have the chance to cover adventure sports in the great outdoors, such as mountain biking, river rafting, climbing, hiking, skiing, and snowboarding.

The Taos News is the perennial winner of the best small weekly in the U.S. award from the National Newspaper Association and the New Mexico Press Association general excellence award.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a central role in continuing our newspaper’s legacy of outstanding community journalism and grow your career at a weekly known for excellence.

Job requirements:

  • Provide 4-6 stories and briefs weekly, plus schedules and sports roundups

  • Take photos at sporting events, with some support from freelance photographers and our staff photographer

  • Work with our editor-in-chief and design team to create a 4-5-page sports section each week, making thoughtful decisions about stories, photos and other graphics.

  • Attend weekly meetings with the editorial staff to strategize about weekly editions and pitch stories

  • Work night and weekends, as needed, to cover important games and events

  • Provide reporting support for other sections, such as our seasonal magazines, as needed

  • Proficiency with Mac-based operating systems and applications

  • Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Impeccable journalistic ethics

  • Previous reporting experience and/or a degree in journalism preferred
