The Journal Gazette in
Fort Wayne, the largest locally owned newsgathering organization in northeast
Indiana, is looking for a reporter to cover multiple sports but
focusing primarily on the Fort Wayne Komets hockey club. The Komets are
one of the oldest and most successful minor league clubs in the country and
they have a rabid and devoted following.
We cover the Komets like an NHL team, and expect the successful candidate to cultivate sources, advance and cover home games, certain road games, write recaps on other games and stay abreast of league news. We have a popular blog we expect to be updated regularly as well as a newsletter and expect a lively and frequest social media presence.
Other duties include covering a variety of high school sports, spot coverage of area colleges, city golf championships, and filling in on the Sports Desk when neeeded.
Candidates with at
least 2-4 years of reporting experience at a daily newspaper are preferred; a
college degree is also preferred but not mandatory.
The successful candidate
will know AP style, have a vast knowledge of social media, video, demonstrate
above average organizational skills, and be able to meet tight deadlines.
The ability to communicate well and work with other reporters and newsroom is
imperative, along with exercising strong news judgment.
