Join the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news network as Communications Director to amplify the reach of our award-winning journalism and the national States Newsroom brand.

 

States Newsroom is looking for an accomplished, entrepreneurial professional to help with communications, PR and marketing needs for a unique news organization. You’ll handle outreach to other media organizations to promote your colleagues’ work, respond to media requests, support staff media appearances, and develop new strategies to drive awareness of our network. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day marketing of the States Newsroom brand and work closely with senior leaders on the overall communications strategy for the organization.

The skilled media relations professional, writer and communicator we’ll hire can be based at either of our headquarters offices in Chapel Hill, NC or Washington, DC, or be fully remote within the U.S. Remote candidates must be able to travel to our offices as needed several times per year.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee and execute all public affairs and editorial communications, including writing press releases, social posts and other promotional materials
  • Pitch national and regional media appearances and ensure that stories are achieving maximum reach across broadcast media, online/print, podcasts and newsletters
  • Collaborate with editorial, digital, and membership staff to develop strategies and execute outreach and marketing plans for our journalism and States Newsroom brand
  • Organize professional media training sessions
  • Track the impact of our journalism for reports and fundraising presentations
  • Pitch trade press stories that highlight our products and technical developments
  • Cultivate journalists, reporters, thought leaders and new media figures to raise awareness of our work
  • Help connect our work to communities that have been historically overlooked or marginalized in state policy development
  • Support state-level staff with communications and outreach to their audiences
  • Occasional travel may be required

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPENSATION

We’re looking for someone who demonstrates:

  • Enthusiastic support for the power of journalism in democracy
  • At least five to 10 years experience in public relations or marketing roles, including at least some for a news organization, or an equivalent combination of newsroom and communications experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong news judgment and ability to produce accurate communications on deadline
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and priorities
  • Excitement for collaboration and innovation across teams
  • Strategic and creative vision for an expansive and growing news organization
  • Great self-direction and the ability to manage short- and long-term tasks

The minimum salary for this position is $90,000 and rises with experience.  Our generous benefits package includes:

Authorization to work in the United States is required. All States Newsroom employees are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID within 30 days of hire. States Newsroom will provide all necessary equipment.
