Organizational Setting

FAO Mongolia works with the vision “to be a leading, credible and responsive partner in ensuring food and nutrition security of the population”. The office has been coordinating projects and programmes in research, capacity building, natural resources management, technology transfer, food and agriculture policy, livestock production systems management, emergency and post crisis management, forestry information, statistics, food security and nutrition, emergency response operations, crop production system management, and food quality and safety.

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Mongolia and direct supervision of the National Project Manager, and in close cooperation with the National Vegetable/Agronomy expert, Greenhouse Construction Specialist, and admin staff of FAO Mongolia.

Technical Focus

The project “Enhancing production and market access of vegetables to support economic diversification in Mongolia” is designed to enhance food security and dietary diversity through increasing greenhouse-based vegetable production and market access. The project aims to (i) boost the supply of local fresh vegetables and vegetable products through promoting greenhouse-based vegetable production, (ii) expand market access for vegetable growers by involving private investors and improving value chain management, and (ii) share/disseminate experiences and lessons that improve commercial viability and profitability of vegetable production in Mongolia; The project will also build a mid-sized, energy efficient, long duration greenhouse in partnership with an interested private investor in selected Aimag in order to showcase sustainable greenhouse technology and range of cultivation methods.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Provide technical inputs into the Venlo type greenhouse technology and range of cultivation methods (hydroponic cropping practices, use of agricultural inputs, planting density, seedling preparation, application of fertilizers, harvesting, cleaning and grading of vegetables, weed control, pest control, integrated pest management, designing, construction, and exploitation technologies; regulation of microclimate inside the structure technology, maintenance, and cultivation methods, and post-harvest management and marketing) based on international best practices on greenhouse hydroponic vegetable production;
• Provide close backstopping support to the project team, especially National Vegetable/Agronomy expert and project beneficiary greenhouse private companies, and in consultation with them, towards developing detailed work plan for annual planting and harvesting seasons;
• Support development of hydroponic planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines for newly constructed Venlo type greenhouses in cooperation with the Private companies;
• Develop a package of technical assistance for high productivity sustainable vegetable production practices including soil conservation, soil fertility and plant nutrition management (including use of bio, organic and mineral fertilizers), irrigation management, integrated pest management, integrated and organic production, seed production, harvest and post-harvest practices etc.
• Support the National Vegetable/Agronomy expert towards preparing training curricula and training material that include examples from the current international best practices and examples of new approaches and specific measures for Venlo type Hydroponic greenhouse production. Training should include all topics from selection of right soil subsidies, preparation of nutrition solutions, planting, conducting all necessary agro-technical measures, to harvesting, past-harvest treatment, producing own seedling, record keeping, etc.
• Develop handbook on the selection, installation, operation, and technical parameters of hydroponic cultivation equipment\:
• Prepare a SOP for preparation of nutrition solutions, adjustment of ingredients and their usage in hydroponic cultivation and hydroponic cultivation techniques in Mongolia;
• Develop a recommendation for harvesting, and post-harvest technologies;
• Conduct the greenhouse type and cultivation technology analyses for the selected vegetables;


Minimum Requirements

• Master’s degree in agronomy, vegetable production or other related field;
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in greenhouse vegetable production, of which a minimum of 3 years includes proven experience at the international level;
• Working knowledge (level C) of English.

Selection Criteria

• Practical experience in providing trainings and transferring knowledge including the provision of technical assistance to farmers;
• Experience in the government or UN system is an asset.
• Readiness for intensive field work
