Position description

The Wilf Family Department of Politics seeks qualified candidates for two Visiting Assistant Professor positions in political theory (preferred) or other political science subfields as part of a university initiative in civic education. Each position is to run for one year from September 1, 2026 pending budgetary and administrative approval. The position provides opportunities to gain teaching experience, develop professional skills, and to engage in scholarship during the appointment period.

Job Summary:
Teach two undergraduate seminars related to civic education (including topics such as citizenship, freedom of expression, history and theory of democracy, law and justice, and history of political thought) per academic year as Instructor of Record; provide support for civic education lecture courses taught by NYU faculty; prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and university presses.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $70,000.

Qualifications

Years of experience: 0-5; post-PhD preparation for career in political theory (preferred) or other political science subfields. We will prioritize candidates with research interests in political theory connected to the aims of civic education, and with additional interest and training in empirical political science. The ideal candidate will also show evidence of excellent teaching skills particularly related to the convening of difficult and inclusive conversations. Applicants must possess a doctorate in political science or a related field prior to the beginning of the position.
