Description:
Writer-Editor
(GS-14)
FBI
Office of Public Affairs, Washington, DC
Position
Overview
The FBI’s
Office of Public Affairs seeks an experienced writer-editor to serve as chief
editor and team lead over a small team that tells the FBI’s story to our
workforce through our internal news publications — “BuNews” (short news and
feature articles, videos, and podcasts published on our employee intranet, 2-3
times per week) and “The Investigator” (the FBI’s quarterly magazine for
employees, now in its 92nd year). The FBI has amazing people and stories to
cover; telling these stories to our workforce helps Bureau employees feel more
connected to their colleagues and to the FBI mission.
This is a
“player-coach” role where you will both report and write your own stories and
edit and direct the work of others. You’ll be responsible for overseeing the
production of engaging news and feature articles and multimedia products (e.g.,
podcasts, photo essays, and videos) that highlight the FBI’s people, mission,
and successes for our workforce. We’re looking for someone with a passion for
storytelling, superior writing and editing skills, good news judgment, and the
ability to organize and lead a team. Experience in a deadline journalism
environment is a plus, as is experience working with graphic designers,
photographers/videographers/podcast producers, and web designers.
Major
Duties
- Write
and edit engaging news and feature articles and multimedia products (e.g.,
podcasts, photo essays, and videos) that highlight the FBI’s people,
mission, and successes for our workforce. When appropriate, these products
may also appear on the FBI’s external communications channels (e.g.,
FBI.gov). - Direct
the conception of individual story ideas and the overall themes of BuNews
coverage and each issue of The Investigator, determining the right mix of
topics as well as formats (articles vs. videos, podcasts, photo essays,
etc.). Use and interpret site traffic and readership data to help decide
how best to serve our employee audience. - Manage,
guide, and evaluate the work of both other members of the team and outside
contributors from other OPA units and FBI divisions. Assign stories to
contributors based on their interests, knowledge, skills, and experience,
and support and guide them through story development, reporting, writing,
and editing. Motive the team to tell compelling stories. - Closely
edit features and stories to ensure every news product is accurate,
concise, well-written; aligns with the objectives and strategy of the FBI
and the Office of Public Affairs; and appeals to a wide employee audience.
Sometimes this requires extensive editing to bring stories by less
experienced contributors up to the level required for publication. - Cultivate
contacts throughout the FBI to generate leads and story ideas and develop
new contributors. Consult with senior Bureau officials and subject-matter
experts and use knowledge of FBI program functions and policies to provide
the most thorough, objective, and accurate products. Ensure approval of
content for all written products through appropriate channels.
Location
This
position is based at FBIHQ in Washington, DC, with the option to telework one
day per week.
