Around 800,000 members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have parted ways with the party over the past year, according to a report on the T24 news website on Wednesday.
The AKP had 10,719,000 members in 2018, dropping to 9,931,103 this year, according to data from the website of the Supreme Court of Appeals.
The AKP, which has been in power since 2002, has been bleeding support over the past several years and lost elections in major provinces in the mayoral elections held on March 31. Some heavyweights of the party such as former deputy minister Ali Babacan and former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu also left the party and are planning to establish rival parties to the AKP.
