As assistant professor in Political History, your knowledge and experience will have a significant impact on high-quality research and education at the Faculty of Arts.

We are looking for applicants well-versed in one (or a combination) of the following fields of expertise within political history as a discipline, demonstrated by academic publications: environmental history; early-modern history (pre 1800s); the history of international (intergovernmental or civil-society) organisations; the history of Dutch imperialism and colonialism.

As an assistant professor you will be part of the Department of History, Art History and Classics and you will participate in its educational programme at all levels, in both Dutch and English. You will teach in Dutch- and English-taught BA programmes in History, providing specialised courses in the field of Political History as well as general courses. At the Master’s level, you will participate in the Dutch-taught specialisations Geschiedenis & Actualiteit and Politiek en Parlement as well as in the Research Master’s programme in Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies. You will supervise students writing their papers and theses, participate in educational support activities such as tutoring, and actively contribute to the development of the curriculum.

Your research will be embedded in the Radboud Institute for Culture & History (RICH). You are a productive and active researcher who develops projects, writes, publishes and collaborates on themes that contribute to the central questions of the expertise group, one of the RICH research groups and RICH in general. You will seek external funding and will be active in public engagement activities. You will cooperate with scientific staff in research activities and will participate in working groups, committees and/or project groups within the department, programme or faculty.

In this position a standard part of your working hours is reserved for teaching (incl. administrative tasks) and for research (excl. additional research funding). The current balance for assistant professors is 60%-40%.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in the field of Political History.
  • You have research ambitions, as evidenced by publications, funding applications and initiatives.
  • You are able to establish innovative connections with other staff members of the expertise group in both research and teaching.
  • You have a national and international network of academic contacts.
  • You have demonstrable experience in reaching out to non-academic audiences.
  • You have undergraduate and graduate teaching experience and have contributed to curriculum development.
  • You have experience with supervising undergraduate and graduate theses.
  • You have a formal basic qualification in academic teaching (UTQ, for example the Dutch BKO), or are committed and able to obtain one within two years.
  • Dutch is your native language, or you demonstrate your commitment to mastering the Dutch language by obtaining C1 level within 18 months.
  • You hold a Cambridge Certificate (CPE2 level) in English or equivalent, or you are committed to obtaining this certificate in the foreseeable future.

The Faculty of Arts  is committed to producing knowledge with a significant scientific and social impact. With over 500 academic and support staff, we teach and conduct research in the fields of history and art, languages and cultures, and linguistics and communication, using innovative methodologies and working in close collaboration between the disciplines. We offer

  • Employment for 0.8 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €3,807 and a maximum of €5,922 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 11 or 12 ).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • It concerns a temporary employment for 1.5 years, with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services .
