Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday said that the Strategic Compass adopted by EU will make EU part of the problems, not solutions, and will not lead to the right strategies in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In a written statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized EU’s document titled “Strategic Compass” approved by EU Foreign Relations Council on Monday.
“Part of the document which deals with the Eastern Mediterranean, specifically refers to Turkey and was dictated to EU by two EU members which disregard the rights of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots in this sea and have maximalist maritime jurisdiction claims,” the statement said.
“As such, it is against international law, conventions and even EU,” it added.
The Foreign Ministry blamed “EU for losing sight of facts and treating a NATO Ally, which is a candidate for full EU membership, with a narrow point of view”.
The defence ministers of EU adopted the long-awaited Strategic Compass document on Monday, presenting a plan to reinforce the bloc’s defenses in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Today the Council has formally approved the Strategic Compass, at a time when we witness the return of war in Europe,” the European Council said.
“The Compass gives the European Union an ambitious plan of action for strengthening the EU’s security and defence policy by 2030,” it added.
