Turkey’s drone attacks targeted the south and the centre of Kobani on Wednesday morning.
A Kurdish patriot called Ekrem Üstek (50) was killed in the drone attacks.
Ekrem Üstek, originally from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, had come to Kobani upon a call for mobilisation during attacks by the Islamic State (ISIS) gangs against Kobani in 2014.
Ekrem Üstek was married and a father of two children. He had been with the Kurdistan Freedom Movement for many years and he had been kept in prisons in Turkey for 10 years in the 1990’s.
Üstek’s son is also currently imprisoned in Turkey.
Controversial reporting of Turkey’s drones is widespread in the mainstream media outlets of western countries, usually only reporting about the role they are playing in Ukraine in the war against Russia.
However it is not reported that attacks by Turkish drones are frequently causing civilian casualties and material damage in North and East Syria.
On 25 December, 2021 for instance, a Turkish drone bombed the stadium where the Kobani football team was playing, which resulted in the injury of a number of players, including Mizgin Ahmad’s husband, reported North Press Agency on 5 May.
Mizgin’s husband died as a result of the injury, leaving Mizgin as a single parent for her four children.
Meghan Bodette, director of research at the Kurdish Peace Institute responded in a tweet to a report by the New Yorker seemingly looking like a commercial for Turkish drones, saying:
“Instead of reading propaganda for a dictator’s favourite arms dealer, read instead about Mizgin Ahmad, whose husband was killed in a Turkish drone strike in Syria. Her four kids are still too young to understand why their father isn’t ever coming home.”
A funeral ceremony is going to be organised for Ekrem Üstek on Thursday at 14:00pm in Kobani.
