On Monday, actors from the Amed Municipal Theatre in Diyarbakır (Amed) performed a previously banned Kurdish language adaptation of Cervantes’s famous Don Quixote in Kartal, Istanbul.

The audience gave the play, which was performed at the Kartal Municipality Soğanlık Cultural Centre, a standing ovation.

The actors from the Amed Municipal Theatre team will continue to tour and perform the play at different venues until 29 May.

Recently, several high-profile Kurdish-language events have been cancelled, including a concert by internationally renowned and award winning Kurdish singer Aynur Doğan, drawing widespread protests.

Another high profile ban was against a concert by Metin and Kemal Kahraman, sibling musicians who perform songs in Kurdish and Turkish.

The play, Don Quixote which was also scheduled to be performed 28 May in Turkey’s northwestern Kocaeli province, had been cancelled one week before it was scheduled to be performed.

“We will never give up performing art in Kurdish,” Amed Municipal Theatre actress Berfin Emektar said, speaking about bans on cultural and artistic activities in the Kurdish language.
