The number of new Covid-19 infections in Turkey between July 11 and 17 was twice as high as the previous week, showed figures released today (July 21) by the Ministry of Health.

Accordingly, some 226,532 new infections were detected and 96 people died of Covid-19 in a week, while 121,784 recovered from the disease.

The figures show that the recent sharp surge in the Covid infections and deaths continued last week, with the number of new cases increasing 20 fold over a month.

The country’s death toll stands at 99,184, with a total of 15.52 million cases.

Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca said on Monday the cases had increased 40-fold in four or five weeks, without disclosing the exact numbers.

This was because the latest Covid wave in Europe has reached Turkey, according to the minister.

The Turkish Medical Association (TTB) has called on the government to reintroduce some of the measures, including the indoor mask mandate, in the face of the new Covid wave.

Turkey has so far administered over 149 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine according to the ministry. (VK)
