Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told his Russian counterpart on a phone call that Turkey could play a facilitator role in regarding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine, Turkish presidency said on Saturday.
Zaporizhzhia, Europe’s largest nuclear energy station, has been a focal point in the Russia-Ukraine war since it was captured by Russian forces in March. Kyiv and Moscow have traded accusations about attacks on the power plant.
Erdogan and Putin agreed to discuss the issues in detail when they meet in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, for a summit on September 15-16.
The two leaders also expressed their determination to continue the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear plant in Turkey according to plans, the statement by the presidency said.
Akkuyu’s first reactor is set to be operational by 2023, with the entire plant to be up and running by 2025, meeting around 10 percent of Turkey’s domestic energy need.
In June, Russian state-owned company Rosatom transferred $5 billion to continue the building of the nuclear power plant.
