Turkish Interior Minister visited the United Arab Emirates to meet with his counterpart and other Emirati officials on Tuesday.

Soylu was welcomed at Abu Dhabi Airport by his Emirati counterpart Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the two ministers held a one-on-one meeting before they were joined by their accompanying delegations, Turkish state news agency AA said, while it did not indicate what the agenda of the meetings was.

Soylu only retweeted Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan saying:

“I was pleased to meet His Excellency Suleyman Soylu, Minister of Interior of the friendly Republic of Turkey, and we discussed regional and international developments and challenges, and we launched a strategic dialogue to enhance cooperation in the security fields, and exchange information and experiences in order to achieve the aspirations of the leaderships of the two friendly countries in enhancing the security and stability of the region.”

Government media Aksam said that a “Joint Strategic Security Dialogue mechanism was established” in the ministers’ meeting.

Independent media Yenicag asked if the reason of Soylu’s visit was to negotiate for the extradition of rogue crime boss Sedat Peker, who has been living in UAE since his forced departure from Turkey. Peker, once a close ally of the administration, had to leave Turkey allegedly because of his conflicts with another mafia boss, Alaattin Cakici, a friend of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ultranationalist partner Devlet Bahceli.

Soylu had earlier accused UAE in a live broadcast in May 2021 of being “accomplice,” alongside the US, in the military coup attempt that tried to overthrow the Turkish government on 15 July 2016.
