The Turkish prosecution said that the interior minister’s use of insulting words “murderer,” “disgusting,” and “vile” against imprisoned Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas did not in fact constitute the offense of “insult” and that the alleged offense was “part of the minister’s official duty.”

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu had targeted Demirtas on 27 September over his condemnation of a deadly attack on a police facility, saying:

“Demirtas the murderer! The perpetrator of 6-8 October incidents, the person who recently praised the terrorist chief last week, has condemned the ‘armed attack’ (!) in Mersin… You are so disgusting and vile that you dare whitewash the PKK in this incident, your company in crime, because the strongest partnership is partnership in crime.”

Demirtas posted on Tuesday the decision of the prosecution who dismissed his application to file criminal charges against Soylu.

The prosecution says:

“Although it has been alleged in the application of the complainant that the offense of insult was committed by Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, the alleged offense concerns execution of his duty and is part of his duty as minister.”

Demirtas said:

“The prosecution officially admitted that insulting is part of Soylu’s duty. The fact that Soylu is the Minister Of Criminal Affairs has been confirmed by a decision of the judiciary.”

He added:

“For God’s sake, Will you look at this legal scandal! Use of the word ‘idiot’ is punished by a prison sentence of 2 years 7 months 15 days, while the use of ‘murderer, disgusting, vile’ is considered part of Soylu’s duty! They did not even file my complaint.”

He continued, addressing Soylu:

“The world is still turning, Filthy! You will soon face justice for all the crimes you have committed. Try to enjoy the luxury and glamor before that day comes, for you will not have any of those in prison.”
