Former HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtas urged the opposition to watch out for side steps of interest groups amid the debate surrounding the names to be nominated candidate against President Tayyip Erdogan in next year’s presidential elections.
Demirtas said that a number of opposition groups are trying to put forward the candidate who will give them a new position after the elections as “the candidate who will win”, yet he said any candidate can win this election if agreed upon on principles, not individual or group benefits.
“The question is, will the candidate be designated through an agreement with the rentiers and armchair lovers, or by reconciliation with the forces of democracy? This choice will determine the fate of the elections and afterwards,” Demirtas said.
DIALOGUE WITH EVERYONE
Demirtas also said he could get into dialogue with every political actor as long as it helps solve the serious problems of the people, saying it includes talking to the leaders of the ruling bloc.
“Despite all the suffering and all the cruelty inflicted on us, I would also meet, talk and discuss with Erdogan and Bahceli,
if I believed that this could contribute to the recovery of the people from the disaster,” he said.
Demirtas also said his party is yet to finish the process of nominating its candidate and maybe it would not bi necessary to nominate one, if a joint candidate could be designated with opposition.
