The leader of far right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chided earthquake survivors in Turkey’s southeastern city of Elbistan, the epicenter of the second and Magnitude 7.6 earthquake on 6 February.
In his visit to Elbistan on Tuesday, MHP leader Devlet Bahceli was surrounded by a group of people who tried to voice the difficulties surrounding them. After listening in apparent discontent for a short while, Bahceli snapped, saying:
“You don’t have the right to sabotage the visit of Mr. President and other government officials. Be silent! Off with you all.”
Bahceli made his first visit to the earthquake zone 15 days after twin earthquakes struck, to the devastated southern border province of Hatay alongside Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Bahceli recently said he ended his membership of Besiktas Sports Club, upon fans’ protests against the government during a football game played on Sunday, and announced that he is now a member of Istanbul’s Karagumruk Sports Club.
While MHP does not take part in the administration of Erdogan, it vigorously supports the administration and is part of the election bloc People’s Alliance alongside the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
