On a visit to the earthquake-stricken city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, the leader of the pro-government BBP (Great Unity Party), Mustafa Destici, tried to scare voters by promising them a “high price in the hereafter” if they voted for the opposition.

“A presidential candidate and an alliance in which the PKK offshoot HDP participates or supports cannot be supported. The sin for this would be heavy. They would have to pay a very high price both in this world and the hereafter,” Destici said, according to DHA news agency.

Mithat Sancar, co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), parliament’s third biggest, called on CHP (Republican People’s Party) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu on Monday to visit HDP to talk on principles for HDP’s support in the elections, after Kilicdaroglu was nominated as a joint opposition candidate of the six opposition parties that make up the Nation Alliance.

The HDP is widely seen as a kingmaker in presidential and parliamentary elections expected on May 14 and the Nation Alliance will likely need their support to end Erdogan’s two-decade political rule, but senior figures from the alliance also say HDP’s support could undermine backing from nationalist votes.
