The opposition’s joint presidential candidate Kemal Kilidaroglu said in a video message on Tuesday that they are faced with “a coalition of radicals” who are “ready to do horrible things,” and that the presidential race should be won in the first round to avoid further suffering.
Five days ahead of the elections in Turkey, Kilicdaroglu said:
“We see everyday that the coalition of radicals we are facing are intent to do anything. They are ready to do horrible things. If you’re saying, ‘We’ll eventually win, but the healing shouldn’t take too long, shouldn’t take years,’ then we’ve got to win in the first round. And if we’re going to win in the first round, this means that the current opposition should also win the maximum number of seats in the parliament. The maximum number of seats means the capability to change the system swiftly.”
He continued:
“What I’m trying to say is, let’s focus on what we want to change right now, because once we have gotten rid of the thing that we want to replace, we’ll have a new system; and relatively small groups, even individuals will then be able to express their opinions and address them to the right people. Their voices will be heard. People will be able to voice the strongest opposition against me. This is actually the entire objective. In other words, democracy. In other words, freedom of expression: To make Turkey a country where people can voice their opposition. The rest is easy for all. For this reason, we should win in the first round.”
