Turkish journalist Merdan Yanardag has been summoned by the prosecutor’s office in Istanbul after he unveiled an alleged assassination plot against the opposition’s joint presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
“I think it is necessary to share an important event that will deeply affect Turkey’s political and social life with the public, even if it is late. Because I trust my source… It is stated that a group planning to assassinate Kemal Kilicdaroglu has entered Turkey from Georgia,” tweeted Merdan Yanardag, Turkey’s Tele1 TV General Manager.
In subsequent tweets, Yanardag added more information about the alleged plot, mentioning the name of the alleged mastermind behind the plot, Galip Özturk, a fugitive businessman who is reportedly living in Georgia. Yanardag also warned that the potential assassination attempt could take place during Kilicdaroglu’s scheduled rally in Turkey’s northern Samsun province on Friday.
The allegation was widely circulated on social media, leading to a flurry of reactions from the public.
The authorities have launched an investigation into the matter under the “Dissemination of False Information that Misleads the Public” provision of the Deception Law, which has been the subject of much controversy in Turkey.
The authorities have not yet made any official statements regarding the veracity of the claims made by Yanardag.
