All advisors of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu were dismissed, CHP announced in a statement on Thursday.
The announcement came as Kilicdaroglu is under criticism for not standing down after his defeat in the presidential election by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Kilicdaroglu lost by a margin of four points, and his party could not receive any more than it did in previous elections despite Erdogan being cornered by economic woes.
The number of Kilicdaroglu’s advisors were close to 80, T24’s Eray Gorgoulu said citing CHP sources, adding that American economic and social theorist Jeremy Rifkin was among the advisors dismissed. Rifkin, the author of groundbreaking books about the impact of scientific and technological changes on the economy, the workforce, society, and the environment, was earlier targeted in Turkey by government figures and media almost entirely on grounds that he was a foreigner and not one of Turkey’s own economists.
Kilicdaroglu previously had a majority of the party’s central executive council members replaced, in an attempt to show that he was responding to calls for change in the party.
CHP is set to hold its congress before the end of 2023. The party’s regulation enables the party leader to have a great influence on who are elected as congress delegates, and this is likely to provide Kilicdaroglu with a significant advantage if he runs for another term.
