The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation against TÜSİAD High Advisory Council President Ömer Aras on the grounds that, in his speech at the association’s general assembly on February 13, 2025, he allegedly made remarks that could influence and direct ongoing investigations and prosecutions, as well as statements that were false and capable of disturbing public peace. He is being investigated for “attempting to influence a fair trial” and “publicly spreading false information.”

Following these developments, honorary presidents and former executives of TÜSİAD are reportedly planning to hold a special meeting to assess the charges against Aras and the potential impact of this process on the association.

In its official statement, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that Aras, in his speech, made remarks that could influence and direct investigations and prosecutions, as well as statements that were false and capable of disturbing public peace. As a result, a prosecutorial investigation was initiated on charges of “attempting to influence a fair trial” and “publicly spreading false information.”

Aras’s speech highlighted the country’s morale crisis and confidence issues, emphasizing that recent political events had increased public anxiety and damaged trust.

This development marks the first investigation into a private sector representative following months of judicial pressure on opposition leaders and journalists. Analysts warn that such measures could undermine foreign investor confidence and negatively impact Turkey’s economic stability.

Given that TÜSİAD represents businesses accounting for 85% of Turkey’s foreign trade and 80% of corporate tax revenues, the outcome of this investigation is being closely watched.

As events unfold, further statements from TÜSİAD and relevant authorities are expected to provide greater clarity on the situation. In response, TÜSİAD’s honorary presidents and former executives are reportedly convening to evaluate the implications of these accusations and how they may affect the association.
