Turkey joined a high-level videoconference on Friday with the European Union and key NATO partners, emphasizing the need for strengthened defense cooperation and continued support for Ukraine. The meeting, which included leaders from Turkey, the UK, Canada, Norway, and Iceland, reaffirmed NATO’s critical role in European security and stability.
European Council President Antonio Costa highlighted the importance of collaboration between the EU and non-EU NATO members, stating, “Our cooperation with likeminded NATO partners is vital for international security. For Ukraine. For stepping up our joint efforts on defense.”
The virtual meeting included Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir. EU leaders, including Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, debriefed the participants on decisions taken at the European Council, including discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities, stating, “With our REARM Europe plan, we are stepping up in defense. For the defense of our people, territories, and assets. And for the long-term security of our brave neighbor Ukraine.”
Strengthening Defense Ties Amidst Conflict
The discussions focused on Ukraine and strengthening defense ties. The five non-EU NATO members welcomed the initiative and stressed the need for close coordination among allies.
The leaders also underscored the importance of NATO as the primary framework for collective security, emphasizing that the alliance must complement EU-led efforts in defense and deterrence.
Costa committed to maintaining ongoing coordination with Turkey and other NATO partners in this format, reinforcing the EU’s Thursday European Council conclusions, which underlined the importance of working together with “like-minded non-EU partners.”
Implications for Turkey’s Strategic Position
Turkey’s participation in these discussions highlights its evolving role in European defense initiatives. Despite tensions over EU membership, Ankara’s strategic importance remains undeniable due to its military strength, geographic location, and active engagement in regional security affairs.
With Turkey continuing to balance relations between NATO, the EU, and Russia, its role in European security discussions is expected to grow.
