Several people and members of political parties have started to file criminal complaints against President Erdoğan’s saying “slut” to Gezi Park protesters.
Yesterday (June 1) on the 9th anniversary of the Gezi Protests, Turkey’s President and Justice and Development Party(AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called “sluts” to people joining to wave of mass demonstrations dates back to 2013.
Erdoğan repeated his claim that the protesters “went into a mosque with bottles of beer,” and said, “They are corrupt, they are sluts, they know nothing about a holy mosque.”
Right after he made his statements, the president faced a backlash on social media with several people sharing messages lashing out at him.
Today (June 2) many citizens, as well as public figures and opposition party members, have filed a criminal complaint against the president’s statements.
Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) İzmir Deputy and Clerk Member of the Presidential Council of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Sevda Erdan Kılıç filed a criminal complaint about Erdoğan’s calling the participants of the Gezi Resistance “sluts”.
Following Kılıç, several other people also filed a criminal complaint including Turkey Worker’s Party (TİP) MP Sera Kadıgil against Erdoğan, on charges of “insulting” and “inciting the public to hatred and enmity”.
Speaking in front of the Çağlayan Court House in İstanbul, Kadıgil stated the following:
“We are all very angry; As women, LGBTI+s, and men all over Turkey, we are very angry like anyone who has been exposed to the oppression of this palace regime.”
“We are not stepping back, women will remain, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and palace darkness will go”
