Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu slammed Athens’ plans to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles off Crete, warning that it is a cause for war.

“Let alone 12, we will not even allow Greece to extend its territorial waters by a single mile in the Aegean,” Cavusoglu said in a press briefing on Thursday.

“The decision taken by our parliament in 1995 over the issue is clear and valid,” he said, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Turkish parliament on June 9, 1995, has declared that a unilateral action by Greece to expand its territorial waters would constitute a casus belli (cause for war).

The Greek media on Sunday said that Greece is planning to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles to the south and west of the island of Crete in March.

“Once again, we are warning Greece; do not pursue a fake heroism policy by relying on those who you are trying to get their support.

Don’t pursue an adventure. It won’t end well for you,” Cavusoglu said.

Greece currently maintains six nautical miles of territorial waters in the eastern Aegean.
