Three universities in the central Anatolian province of Konya are not serving breakfast and lunch during Ramadan.
Konya Selçuk University, Konya Technical University, and Konya Necmettin Erbakan University are only serving “iftar” (meal eaten after fasting) and “sahur” (meal eaten pre-dawn before fasting) meals, the daily BirGün reported on March 24.
Muslims who are fasting during Ramadan, which started on March 23, do not eat or drink anything between approximately 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. While some universities offer special meal hours for those who are fasting, three universities from Konya province decided not to provide food for those who are not fasting.
Officials from Selçuk University confirmed the move to the BirGün.
The students who cannot find cheap food outside the campus have been criticizing the university administrations.
Public universities’ cafeterias are subsidized by the state; hence, they are the cheapest alternative for most students.
A student said their university implemented a similar practice last year as well.
