Description:

Full-Time Reporter

Are you looking for a great reporting opportunity in a growing suburban community just minutes from big-city amenities?

The DeSoto Times-Tribune, a family-owned community newspaper in DeSoto County, Mississippi—just outside Memphis—has an opening for a full-time reporter.

Although our primary focus is community news, there is no shortage of hard-news headlines. DeSoto County is one of Mississippi’s fastest-growing counties and is located only 15 minutes from downtown Memphis and Beale Street. We compete directly with Memphis-area newspapers, television stations and online news outlets.

We are looking for a flexible, motivated reporter who is ready to cover the stories that matter to our community. In a typical week, you might cover a DeSoto County Board of Supervisors meeting on Monday, a Board of Aldermen meeting on Tuesdays, a major business announcement on Wednesday, a school board meeting on Thursday and community features or events over the weekend.

Our newsroom staff is small, but the opportunities to develop your skills and grow as a reporter are unlimited.

Qualifications and Responsibilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field required

  • At least two years of professional newsroom experience preferred; qualified recent graduates will also be considered

  • Must live locally or be willing to relocate to the DeSoto County area

  • Strong writing, interviewing and news judgment skills

  • Ability to manage multiple stories, assignments and deadlines

  • Ability to take quality photographs

  • Availability to cover breaking news for our website

  • Social media experience is required

  • Ability to create social media content, promote stories, report breaking news and engage with readers across multiple platforms

  • Layout and graphic design experience is a plus but not required

  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends

We offer a flexible work schedule and the opportunity to join an exciting news team covering one of Mississippi’s most active communities. This is an in-person position and is not available remotely.

To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter and work samples to [email protected].
