İstanbul police stifle Women’s March

Police have thwarted attempts by Turkish women to mark the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women in Istanbul’s famed Istiklal Avenue.

According to Turkish media outlets and several human rights defenders, police fired plastic bullets at a group of around 300 activists in the country’s largest city.

According to Cumhuriyet daily, numerous women have been detained by the police.
