The Turkish gendarmerie on Thursday detained nine people who are being sought by prosecutors for alleged links to the faith-based Gülen movement on their way to Greece via the Evros River, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Six of the suspects were detained in the village of Yenikadın in Edirne province, while the other three were taken into custody in Rahmanca, the report said.

Turkey accuses the Gülen movement of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt, although it strongly denies any involvement.

Since the failed coup, the Turkish government has launched a massive crackdown on the movement’s followers, thousands of whom fled the country to escape prosecution.

Still, some 600,000 people have been investigated over Gülen links in the last three years.

Meanwhile the Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday issued detention warrants for 20 military members on accusations of Gülen ties.

The police raided houses in eight provinces and detained at least 10 of the suspects.
