Thousands of people attended the Newroz celebration in the mountainous majority Kurdish region of Hawraman in East Kurdistan (northwest Iran) on Saturday.

As torches were lit across the province of Hawraman, a great fire was built in the town square, and the people started to gather.

A huge crowd soon formed around the fire, women colourful in traditional dress, everyone singing and dancing.

Newroz, New Year’s day in much of the Middle East, falls on the day of the spring equinox, and is celebrated by Kurds in Iran as a day of uprising for freedom, as it is in all Kurdistan.

The Kurds in Western Iran, constitute about 10% of the total population of the country, and have been waging a struggle for cultural and administrative rights and autonomy for over a century.

Kurds form the third largest ethnic group in Iran, after the Persians and the Azerbaijanis.
