The diplomatic row concerning Turkey’s military intervention in Arab countries further deepened as Turkey rejected decisions adopted by the organization calling for the withdrawal of Turkish forces.
During the foreign ministers meeting of Arab League members convention in Egypt’s capital Cairo, The Arab Ministerial Committee on Turkish Interference in the Internal Affairs of Arab Countries stressed once again the need for Turkish forces to withdraw from Arab countries including Libya, Iraq and Syria.
The decisions once again targeted Turkey, and were taken under the influence of some “narrow-minded and short-term interests”, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the stance deprives the Arab League of the opportunity to make a concrete, constructive and sustainable contribution to the solution of regional problems.
The Foreign Ministry said Turkey will continue to fight “terror threat” to protect its national security and interests in line with the principles and norms of international law.
Turkey continues to rely heavily on the military as a tool in the foreign conflicts, as reflected in its intensive military activity in northern Syria, ongoing air strikes in northern Iraq, and its support to Syrian mercenaries to Libya.
Turkish military activities in northern Syria intensively target the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey deems terrorist due to its affiliation with the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party.) Turkish forces hit Kurdish militants in the region with artillery and drone strikes on an almost daily basis.
The Turkish Air Force continues to carry out routine strikes in northern Iraq targeting Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) activities.
Turkey also continues to support Syrian mercenaries from the Sultan Murad Brigade, the Hamza Division, and Ankara-affiliated Syrian National Army (SNA) groups that it sent to Libya.
