A person was sentenced to a prison term of one year six months and twenty-two days in Turkey for posting videos of Kurdish songs with “offensive political content” on social media, Mezopotamya News Agency reported.
A Turkish court ruled guilty in the case of Yusuf Gunes on Tuesday in the first hearing in Istanbul.
Gunes was arrested in early April and subsequently indicted of “making propaganda for a terrorist group.”
Gunes told the court that he is a speaker of Zazaki, a language spoken by a part of the Kurdish people in Turkey, and that he did not understand Kurmanji, spoken by majority of Kurds. He said that he was not aware what the contents of the songs were as they were in Kurmanji.
The judge asked him if he is a sympathizer of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), designated a terror group by Ankara, and the prosecution demanded that he is punished for making propaganda for the PKK.
Some parts of the lyrics of the songs, reading, “They came in streams, to journey to Zagros” and “the companions of Zana and Andok, the grandchildren of Sheikh Said,” constituted the “propaganda” offense, according to the prosecution.
As Gunes was found guilty and convicted, the prison sentence was suspended.
