A police car ran over a 17-year-old young man in the Kurdish-majority city of Yuksekova, injuring him severely, Mezopotamya News Agency reported.
The injured teenager, who was initially taken to a hospital in the town for treatment, was later transferred to a hospital in the city of Van after his condition became critical.
The Gatestone Institute said in a recent report in mid April that the deaths and injuries caused by armored vehicles of state forces in Kurdish-majority provinces constitute a systemic problem in Turkey.
There are several cases in which state troops who ran over Kurdish civilians with armored vehicles have gone unpunished.
The police officer who killed five-year-old Efe Tektekin on 11 September 2019 was acquitted. His grandfather Mehmet Tektekin had earlier also been killed by an armored police vehicle, when it ran over him on 6 June 2018.
A police officer who drove an armored vehicle through the wall of a house in the city of Silopi on 4 May 2017, crushing down the wall and fatally running over two sleeping children aged six and seven, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, and his prison sentence of two years and one month was eventually converted into a fine of 19,000 TL (approximately $1,000).
Turkey’s Human Rights Association (IHD) had reported that between 2008 and 2022, at least 43 Kurdish civilians, including 20 children, were killed in 77 incidents involving armored vehicles, and a further 90 civilians were injured.
