An Iranian official unveiled on Monday new plans to boost the gas flow to Turkey and ensure a steady supply of gas within the next six months, Iran’s Tasnim news agency said, after a key ministerial visit to Turkey.
The plans were part of the results of a recent meeting with the representatives of BOTAS, the Turkish state-owned crude oil and natural gas pipelines and trading company, said Head of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Dispatching Department Mohammadreza Julaee, according to Tasnim.
Julaee said that the agreements allowed Iran and Turkey to coordinate plans on all technical and operational activities relating to the gas exports to Turkey within the next six months.
The plans will include a broad range of operational projects, such as repair and maintenance, covering the pipelines between the countries, and renovation of a compressor station at the Bazargan border crossing, Julaee said.
On Saturday, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji and Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez met in Turkey’s capital Ankara to discuss the need to extend the gas export contract between the two countries which expires in 2026, Iranian news agency Irna said.
Owji also met with the minister of finance Nureddin Nebati, and the head of the Central Bank along with major companies active in the energy sector.
“Iran is known as a reliable source of gas supplies across the world. So we should recognize the importance of this position and rise to its challenges,” Julaee said.
With proven natural gas reserves standing at 991.6 trillion cubic feet, Iran holds the world’s second largest gas reserves after Russia.
Iran exports around 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey annually, according to a 25-year deal signed in 2001.
