Vice President of Turkey called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to recognize the “Turkish State of Cyprus,” after he said that they wish to rename the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as “Turkish State of Cyprus.”
Speaking at an event organized in Ankara on Friday for further cooperation between Turkey and TRNC in fields of education, Vice President Fuat Oktay criticized UNSC’s recent resolution to extend peace keeping mission in Cyprus, saying:
“The guarantee for peace in Cyprus is not the UN Peace Mission, but Turkey as a guarantor state, backed by its rights and responsibilities in the context of the treaty of guarantee, and it is the Turkish troops deployed in the island.”
During his speech, Oktay paused as he was about to make a remark on “the future of TRNC,” to point out matter-of-factly that they no longer want to have the word “northern” in the title the republic, and that they wish to rename it as “Turkish State of Cyprus.”
He went on to call upon the UNSC and the international community to recognize “Turkish State of Cyprus,” saying:
“We once more urge the UN Security Council and the international community to ratify the sovereign and equal status of the Turkish Cypriots, and to recognize the Turkish State of Cyprus. We will continue with our efforts to contribute to a solution for the stability and welfare of not only the island of Cyprus, but the entire eastern Mediterranean. We will continue to provide support in every field to contribute to the development of the Turkish State of Cyprus.”
TRNC is a de facto entity established in northern Cyprus after Turkey’s invasion of parts of the island in 1974, and remains unrecognized except for Turkey.
