Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the presidential candidate of a six-party opposition bloc, who is now also likely to receive the backing of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) after a crucial meeting on Monday, posted a video asking: “We’ll unite and win, but against whom?”

In the video recorded at the kitchen of his house he said:

“I’ve been telling you for some time now that my objective is to turn the country into a winner by uniting sides. Well but what exactly are we uniting the sides for? What are we trying to achieve? Are we uniting against [President] Tayyip Erdogan? Are we spending so much energy for such an insignificant objective? No. It’s true that our democracy, economy, justice system and freedoms are under a grave Erdogan threat. This is the case for several years. But my legacy for this country shouldn’t be so limited. Yes, we will send Erdogan away. I’ve been telling you this for a while, and this is the easiest part of our objectives. But our objective is much greater than that. We will provide the conditions to build up a competitive Turkey.”

He continued:

“Don’t pay too much attention to Turk’s propaganda to other Turks. The Communications Directorate are wasting billions of liras for nothing. We are not competing with the world. My dear friends, there is one thing that shows if we are doing well in competition. Are you winning, or losing? Are you able to prosper?”

Noting that structural problems have not emerged with Erdogan but were aggravated under his governments, he said:

“This is because Turkey has spent its energy for years on internal strife. It has gone through coup, economic crisis, polarization, discrimination, organization of gangs, terror. We’ve lost our ability to be competitive as we’ve turned against each other. We have been denied the share we deserve. In short, we should unite for one simple objective: To join in the global competition, to win, and get what we deserve.”

He added:

“I am the one who will pave the correct way to the future for generations to come. We, as the Nation Alliance, will first empower the people, restore the state, tend to bleeding wounds. We will give people back their joy of life. We will counter the disadvantages of disadvantaged groups. We will make investments in the right places. We will restore financial and democratic stability. We will put the country back on track so that the leaders after us will walk safely on solid ground. And I will eventually retire so that I can spend my time with my grandchildren. That simple… I have grave problems to be solved in front of me, and this can be achieved only by a leader who does not have personal political ambitions for the future.”
