Kurdish politician kept from attending his mother’s funeral

Doğan Erbaş, the imprisoned Executive Committee Member of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) was kept from attending his mother’s funeral when a timely prosecutorial decision was not given.

Erbaş was arrested on June 13 after the finalization of a court decision sentencing him to imprisonment; and his mother, Hanım Erbaş passed away on the evening of July 5.

Green Left Party Siirt MP Tuncer Bakırhan and Ceylan Akça, the Diyarbakır MP of the same party attended Hanım Erbaş’s funeral besides a large number of people.

What happened?

İstanbul 14th Heavy Penal Court sentenced Doğan Erbaş to 12 years of imprisonment for “being a member of an organization,” and 1 year 21 months and 22 days of imprisonment for “propaganda of an organization.”

Erbaş was arrested on June 13 after the verdict was validated and sent to the Sincan Prison. (NT/PE)
