The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned of 241 cases of salmonella in tourists returning from Turkey. The agency announced that five clusters of cases have been identified, with the most recent occurring on July 19.

Most cases involved tourists who had traveled to the Antalya region of Turkey. The agency said detailed travel information was available for 93 patients and that most of these tourists had stayed in different hotels as part of an “all-inclusive vacation package.”

At least 33 families who visited the Rixos Sungate resort in Antalya have been affected by severe illnesses, including diarrhea and vomiting. The UKHSA is liaising with Turkish health authorities and other international partners to investigate the incident.

The Agency urges UK citizens visiting Turkey to wash their hands thoroughly before eating and after using the toilet to prevent the spread of salmonella.

Salmonella infections usually improve with home care but can be more severe in young children and people with weakened immune systems. The preponderance of these cases is “alarming,” experts say.

The UKHSA is working with Turkish authorities to identify the source of the salmonella outbreak. In the meantime, the agency is advising tourists to take precautions to protect themselves from infection.
