In a letter to the President of the Security Council, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Mher Margaryan said that the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh has “deteriorated significantly” since Azerbaijan blocked the Lachin corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia and the outside world.
Margaryan said the blockade has led to a severe shortage of essential goods, including food, medicine, and fuel. He also noted that Azerbaijan had deliberately obstructed the supply of natural gas and electricity to Nagorno-Karabakh.
As a result of the blockade, people in Nagorno-Karabakh are facing a “full-fledged humanitarian catastrophe,” Margaryan said. He warned that the blockade is “a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law” and that it “constitutes an existential threat” to the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to the ARMENPRESS, Margaryan called on the UN Security Council to intervene and “take all necessary measures” to end the blockade and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Nagorno-Karabakh.
Nagorno-Karabakh has denied Azerbaijan’s accusations of opening fire on its positions in a separate development. The ministry said Azerbaijan is “generating fake news” to justify its military provocations.
Earlier, the Azerbaijani military opened fire on Armenian border positions near the village of Verin Shorzha in Gegharkunik Province. The Armenian Ministry of Defense said that the Azerbaijani fire was unprovoked and that there were no casualties.
The latest clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan come amid a growing diplomatic crisis between the two countries. Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of trying to provoke a new war in the region.
