The imprisoned former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) responded on Monday to the Turkish Interior Minister, who called him “disgusting” upon his condemnation of a deadly attack on a police facility.

Selahattin Demirtas said earlier in the day, after a police was killed in Turkey’s southern city of Mersin:

“I condemn the armed attack in Mersin. The political responsibility is to insist on non-violent solutions, to stop deaths. We will oppose all forms of violence, we will insist on democratic politics. I want everyone to know this clearly.”

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu targeted Demirtas over this condemnation, saying:

“Demirtas the murderer! The perpetrator of 6-8 October incidents, the person who recently praised the terrorist chief last week, has condemned the ‘armed attack’ (!) in Mersin… You are so disgusting and vile that you dare absolve the PKK [Kurdistan Workers’ Party] in this incident, your company in crime, because the strongest partnership is partnership in crime.”

Demirtas responded:

“Hey filthy, what’s up? Have your sinister plans failed just as you were hoping for a score? Is it why you are so enraged? We will bring peace and brotherhood to this country no matter what you do. Hey filthy, don’t confuse me with the jackals around you. You can always recognize a lion after you’ve seen where it slept.”
