Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan gave details about his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin’s proposal about making Turkey a gas hub, during a chat with journalists traveling with him in the airplane back from Kazakhstan.
“For such a distribution center, of course, Thrace is seen as the most important place for this business,” Erdogan said on Thursday, referring to a region in northwestern Turkey near the Greek border.
“Together with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, we instructed our Energy and Natural Resources Ministry and the relevant institution on the Russian side to work together. They will do this work there,” Erdogan told reporters on the presidential plane returning from a trip to Kazakhstan.
Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller on Thursday said Russia and Turkey have agreed to quickly move on to a specific discussion of the timing of the implementation of new gas proposals from Russia and negotiations can begin as early as next week.
On the sidelines of a meeting in Kazakhstan, Russian leader Putin had proposed building a natural gas hub in Turkey, praising it as “the most reliable partner” for gas deliveries to Europe
But as European countries turned down the offer, some experts say Putin could be eyeing eastern markets.
“Putin may be considering establishing a liquefaction plant in the Mediterranean,” energy consultant Mehmet Dogan said.
