A lawsuit has been filed against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş for his social media posts about the allegations of chemical weapon use against Türkiye.
Demirtaş tweeted on October 19 that the use of chemical weapons was a crime against humanity and an independent, international delegation should go to the region to investigate.
The imprisoned politician is charged with “propagandizing for a terrorist organization” and “degrading the Turkish nation and state.”
In the last week, protests and detainments occurred after allegations accused Türkiye of using chemical weapons against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) during its military operations in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The government rejected the claims.
Turkish Medical Association Chair Prof. Şebnem Korur-Fincancı was detained during a raid on her home on October 26 and remanded in custody the next day for “propagandizing for a terrorist organization.” Several hundred people protested against Türkiye’s alleged use of chemical weapons in the Hague, demanding international investigations.
