EUROPEAN authorities expressed concern today at Greece’s use of a sound cannon to try to scare refugees away.

Greek border police have begun firing bursts of deafening noise from an armoured truck over the Turkish frontier.

The long-rage acoustic device known as a sound cannon matches the volume of a jet engine.

The Greek government says it is part of an array of physical and experimental digital barriers being tested along the 125-mile border to try to intimidate refugees.

European Commission spokesman Adalbert Jahnz said Brussels would be asking Athens for more information about its new system.

Greece “should conform to European fundamental rights, including the right to dignity,” he said.

“Measures must be proportionate and respect fundamental rights, including asylum rights and the principle of non-refoulement.”

Greece has been criticised for breaching international law by sending refugees who reach its territory back into Turkey, though it denies this.
