Turkish officials have rejected a father’s application requesting a name change for his son named after the Turkish president, Cumhuriyet newspaper reported on Sunday.

“The officers denied changing my son’s name due to fear of having to change their working location,” the newspaper cited the father of Recep Tayyip as saying in a report by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) .

The Çankırı Governor’s Office denied the incident in a statement released shortly after the media reports.

“There was no such appointment or official application regarding the request in our records,” the governor’s office said.

“I used to vote for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and hence named my son after President Erdoğan, but now I regret it and want to change it,” the father living in central Anatolian province of Çankırı told a visiting CHP delegation, Cumhuriyet said.

Turkish public support for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s governing alliance has significantly dropped according to the latest polls, due to Turkey’s economic difficulties and increasing distrust in the judiciary.
