A group of women who tried to hold a protest against the rising inflation and low wages in Turkey were kettled by the police in Istanbul on grounds that the little pots and pans some of them had brought to the protest as percussion instruments were ‘dangerous implements’.
The protest, organised by a network of women’s solidarity groups, was to be staged in the largest square on the Asian side of the city on Sunday, but the demonstrators were prevented from gathering in the area by police units.
A representative of the group addressed protestors, who demonstrated despite the police intervention, at a nearby spot.
Figan Ataselim said:
“They are trying to subdue us. Their ban on pots and pans is not incidental. It has no legal basis, and if they ban pots and pans today they’re likely to ban us from taking a single step out of our houses tomorrow (…) We will not give up, we will keep on resisting; we secured all the rights we have through resistance. Nothing happens just by itself. Today we’ve demonstrated here despite the ban. Tomorrow we will keep on demonstrating all over the city with our pots and pans.”
